| The
truth is that you have already
experienced what it is like to be in hypnosis and
I would be surprised if you have not been in hypnosis already
today.
One of the most frequent questions I'm asked, almost daily
infact, and what people are most unsure about is what hypnosis
actually is and how it will feel to them.
I usually answer one
of two ways, the first being:-
Have you met any deaf children? Dinner is ready and you call
them, and they are so engrossed in a film or computer game
that they simply don't hear you? It is often (not always)
genuine, they fail to hear you because they are in a trance
like state (hypnotised).
and the second being:
How about when you're driving your car... it's a familiar
route you've been along many times before. When you arrive
at your destination, you realise that the journey has flown
past without much thought to the actual driving.
Can you remember how intently you concentrated when you first
passed
your driving test?
Your subconscious mind basically
takes over for the most part of your day, trained over many
years to think it knows what is best for you. It has been
taught by you and that lesson has been reinforced over years
of behaviour patterns adopted by you.
Being under hypnosis is like
being very relaxed on a chair or sofa while you watch a good
movie. You are aware of your surroundings but you choose to
remain comfortable and engrossed in this movie. You can hear
other sounds but you're focused on this movie and so you choose
to ignore the other sounds. Well, this is hypnosis.
You're seated on a chair or
sofa and the hypnotist will guide you through a series of
visualisations, this allows your body to relax completely
and, in time, your mind follows the relaxation.
It is at this point that the
therapist continues communicating to your subconscious mind
and intervening with therapeutic positive suggestions. These
enable your subconscious to learn new behaviour patterns.
That really is hypnotherapy
in a nutshell.
