'Go Compare' Tenor used Hypnotherapy for nerves

Go Compare tenor Wynne Evans (or his advert alter-ego Gio Compario) needed hypnotherapy to cure his nerves before he became a TV ad star. Speaking to Nick Ferrari on a Classic FM Interview, he confessed: “I suffered from very, very bad stage fright for about a year.”

Take That! How hypnosis beat my girl's stage fright.

The cameras were ready to whirr into action and pop star Gary Barlow was waiting expectantly in the corner of the Dublin studio. Camilla, 21, was about to shoot her first music video, singing the Take That hit Rule The World.

Camilla looked the picture of calm, clearly enjoying her first taste of stardom. Yet, 24 hours earlier, suffering from a severe attack of stage fright, she had begged a hypnotist to fly over and help her combat her nerves using hypnosis.

In 2009, after Camilla handed Gary her CD in a recording studio, he gave her a record deal. Almost overnight she went from being a student at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford to singing in front of Royalty and TV audiences of millions. Once confident, she had suddenly become terrified of performing live.

What she was feeling was a perfectly normal reaction to stress. When we sense danger - whether real or imagined - the nervous system releases a flood of hormones including adrenaline and cortisol.

These hormones rouse the body for emergency action. Your heart pounds faster, muscles tighten, blood pressure rises, breath quickens and your senses become sharper. It helps you stay focused, energetic and alert.

The problems start when you feel this kind of stress before going on stage, giving a wedding speech or a presentation at work - when you really need to stay calm - and it can have the effect of freezing a person in panic.

The more our nervous system is activated by stress hormones, the harder it is to switch off.

The result is a string of problems including irritable bowel syndrome, ulcers, eczema, low selfesteem, poor sex drive, inability to make decisions, even a nervous breakdown.

But this kind of acute stress is easy to overcome. As Camilla lay on her hotel bed,she was asked to breathe deeply. This opens up the diaphragm and activates the body's relaxation response.

As she became calmer, she was asked to visualisehow excited and happy she was going to feel and focused on all the positive aspects of the next day so that those ideas stayed in her mind. She was able to sing brilliantly, had a fantastic time and the day was a great success.

It is important to give yourself time to stop and relax. I know several CEOs who go to the toilet for five minutes, do some deep breathing, relax mentally and can then go into a meeting able to make necessary decisions.

When breathing deeply, tell yourself positive messages. Your mind absorbs them and when you arrive in the situation you anticipated would be stressful, they will often be there in your head, calming you down. And think about the positives in your life, the people you love or who love you, and those feelings will help calm your body and mind.

What I'm suggesting might sound fluffy but I know from 18 years' experience that it works.

A MUM has lost four stones in weight after being hypnotised into thinking she has a gastric band fitted.

Marion Corns, 35, paid £780 for five sessions with a specialist hypnotherapist after her weight ballooned to 15st 6lbs.

In the four months following the treatment Marion saw her weight drop to just over 11 and a half stone and her dress size from a 22 to 14.

Marion, of Whiston, Merseyside, said: "I've tried every other diet and exercise plan the world has to offer.

"I've tried tablets, WeightWatchers, Atkins, Slimfast, milkshakes and even a personal trainer, but none of them helped me.'

Marion started losing weight after the fourth session — the first with full hypnosis — and after the fifth she began to feel a tightening sensation in her stomach. She added: "Now if I try and eat a large portion I feel a pulling sensation in my tummy as if my stomach is stretching.

"I simply cannot eat large portions of food any more. I am thinner now than I ever have been and if I can lose another stone I will be exactly the weight I want to be.'

Hypnosis can double the success of IVF treatment,
researchers have claimed.

A team from Soroka University, Israel, found 28% of women in the group who were hypnotised became pregnant, compared with 14% of those who were not.

The study of 185 women was presented to the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology conference in Berlin.

Dr Eliahu Levitas, who led the research, told the conference: "Embryo transfer is known to be a stressful time for patients, and it may be that the procedure is the peak of their stress in IVF.

"Hypnosis may be related to a tranquilising effect. Performing embryo transfer under hypnosis may significantly contribute to an increased clinical pregnancy rate."

On average, women in the non-hypnosis group had been trying to conceive for 7.4 years, compared with 4.7 years for those who did receive hypnosis.

Dr Francois Shenfield, of University College London Hospital, UK, said:
"One of the very important confounding factors in this field is the duration of infertility. The longer a couple have been trying to conceive, the less likely they are to conceive spontaneously, and with technical help."

Breast cancer patients need less anaesthetic during operations if they have been relaxed
by hypnosis beforehand

US research suggests.

Patients in the study of 200 women by the Mount Sinai School of Medicine also reported less pain afterwards.

Breast cancer surgery patients often suffer severe side-effects such as pain, nausea and fatigue during and after their operations.

UK experts said more research was needed to prove hypnosis worked.

The side-effects from breast cancer surgery can sometimes mean a longer stay in hospital, extra drugs, or even a return to a hospital ward when patients should be recovering at home.

The Journal of the National Cancer Institute paper is just the latest to conclude hypnosis can help with operations.

Dr Guy Montgomery, who led the research, recruited 200 women to receive either 15 minutes of hypnosis or just a conversation with a psychologist before their surgery.

The women undergoing hypnosis were given suggestions for relaxation and pleasant mental images, and instructions on how to use hypnosis themselves.

Patients who had received hypnosis needed less anaesthetic than the others, and reported less pain, nausea, fatigue and emotional distress after the operation.
